Residents of Akuseki Island in Japan have been forced to evacuate their homes following a relentless series of approximately 1,600 earthquakes recorded over the past two and a half weeks.

According to local reports, 44 residents of the small island have been relocated to Kagoshima, the regional hub, while 15 others evacuated from a nearby island. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

Despite a magnitude 5.1 earthquake striking overnight, officials confirmed that no significant structural damage was recorded. However, the frequent tremors—which began in early June—have taken a psychological toll on the residents, prompting the decision to evacuate as a precautionary measure.

Local government officials have emphasized that the evacuation is temporary, pending further assessments from Japan’s meteorological and disaster monitoring agencies. Emergency shelters and mental health support have also been provided to affected individuals.

The incident has raised renewed attention to the volcanic and seismic activity in Japan’s southern archipelago, with experts warning of the potential for more tremors in the coming days. The Akuseki Island earthquake evacuation is being handled with caution to prevent any casualties or health risks associated with prolonged seismic stress.
